New Orleans, La., Dec. 14, 2008 -- Greater Gentilly High School, housed in the new Lake Area School, took the place of Lake Area Middle School, which was damaged beyond repair by Hurricane Katrina. Greater Gentilly High School one of the "Quick Start" schools was funded as a "capped alternate project" for the Recovery School District, meaning funds have been funneled from other facilities to pay for Greater Gentilly's construction costs. Plaquemines Parish, La., April 1, 2009 -- Plaquemines Parish firefighters recently moved into two brand new fire stations--one in Port Sulphur, the other in Boothville. The fire stations and the firefighting equipment in Plaquemines Parish, was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. FEMA grants provided Plaquemines Parish with the needed funding that made it possible to rebuild these fires stations and purchase nine new fire trucks to replace those destroyed. New Orleans, La., Sep. 21, 2009 -- During Hurricane Katrina, the green and red streetcars were stored in two different barns. The vintage green streetcars rode out the storm in their old Carrollton barn, which did not flood. However, the newer red streetcars sustained almost 60 inches of floodwater in the Canal Street facility where they were stored. FEMA provided $24 million to repair and replace the damaged streetcars. New Orleans, La., March 16, 2010 -- Hurricane Katrina inundated Holy Cross School with 5 to 10 feet of water, destroying every building. The school was originally located New Orleans' Lower 9th Ward, but relocated to the Gentilly neighborhood, the site of the former Cabrini Church, Grammar school and Redeemer Seton High School. St. Bernard Parish, La., May 25, 2011 -- Levee breaks during Hurricane Katrina sent some 10-feet of floodwaters into Val Riess Park, destroying much of the infrastructure of the 33-acre facility in Chalmette. The historic Jackson Barracks suffered damages during Hurricane Katrina.
