August 22, 2013 10:30 a.m. Overview – Severe storms moved across west central and northeastern Wisconsin last night causing downed trees, power lines and other storm damage. One person was killed in Keshena when a tree fell on her vehicle. Menominee County and Tribe have issued disaster declarations for their jurisdictions. The National Weather Service will be surveying damage today to determine if there was a tornado in Shawano County. Tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings were issued across the region last night. At one point, there were over 20,000 customers without power. Currently, there are about 1,000 outages reported. Utility officials expect most of the power outages to be restored later today. Another storm is moving across southern Wisconsin this morning. Several severe thunderstorm warnings have been posted. There have been reports of strong winds and heavy rain but no damage at this time. Brown County – The storm knocked down trees and power lines. Most power has been restored. Calumet County – Strong winds and lightning caused some power outages. Clark County – The storm blew down a tree north of Withee. No injuries were reported. Chippewa County – Hail reported in Bloomer. A tree fell on a parked car in Chippewa Falls. No one was injured. The Sheriff’s Department reported a funnel cloud southeast of Boyd which did not touch down. Door County - County had a few power lines down with limited sporadic power outages. A possible lightning strike caused an electrical fire at a gas station. No severe damages reported. Marathon County – At least three people are without a home this morning after an overnight fire destroyed a duplex on Wausau’s east side. No one was injured in the blaze. Lightning likely started the fire around 10 p.m. Wednesday night, authorities said. Firefighters thought the fire was out last night, according to Wausau Fire Battalion Chief Mark Krueger, but crews were called back to the scene around 5 a.m. this morning when the blaze flared back up. Marinette County – The storm knocked down trees and power lines in the central and southern parts of the county. Lightning reportedly struck a home in the Town of Grover. There are no reports of damage to public infrastructure and no injuries. Menominee County – The Sheriff’s Department reports a woman was killed when a tree fell on top of her car in Keshena. The driver is from Menominee County but the identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of family. The Emergency Operations Center is partially activated. The County Courthouse is open but there is no power. There are widespread power outages with downed trees and scattered debris. Most power has been restored. Sheriff’s officials say some secondary roads may be impassable because of the large amount of tree damage. Menominee Tribe – Emergency shelters are opened at three locations: Tribal office, College Technical Center and Menominee Tribe Casino (Maple and Ada Rooms). Oconto County – A home in Townsend was struck by lightning. Fire crews put out the blaze with minor damage to the structure. Outagamie County – County emergency management officials activated sirens when the National Weather Service reported a possible funnel cloud in Shawano County. Winds reached 61 mph in Appleton and 50 mph in Hortonville and Greenville. Damage includes down trees and power lines. Some roads were blocked due to debris. Portage County – Crews cleared downed trees on roads in Dewey and Linwood Townships this morning. A small outbuilding was struck by lightning and caught fire. Rain extinguished the flames. Shawano County – National Weather Service will be in Shawano County today to determine if damage from last night's storm was caused by a tornado. County emergency management partially activated the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) last night. The EOC is now closed. A lightning strike caused a fire at a nursing home forcing the evacuation of approximately 13 residents who were transported to a sister facility. There are currently no injuries or fatalities reported. Approximately a dozen homes are damaged in the Bonduel area. Local power crews are currently working to restore service. Most of those outages are in the Town of Westcott on the north side of Shawano Lake. WE Energies expects to have all power restored by early this afternoon. Vilas County – Power substation in Eagle River damaged leaving 4,700 without power. Emergency dispatch worked on generator power. Most of the power has been restored. Winnebago County – According to local officials, a semi-truck was overturned on U.S. 41, north of Oshkosh. Apparently the accident was caused by strong winds. No one was seriously injured in the accident. The State Emergency Operations Center at Wisconsin Emergency Management (WEM) remains at level 4. The WEM Administrator, Senior Duty Officer and Duty Officer will continue to monitor the situation.
