DAKAR, Senegal (Aug. 21, 2013) Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) Ray Mabus signs a guest book at Goree Island, an island off the coast of Senegal that was a significant place in the slave trade between the 15th and 19th centuries. Senegal is the last stop on a trip where Mabus visited several countries throughout the region to meet with Sailors and Marines, and civilian and military officials to discuss security and stability and to reinforce existing partnerships with African nations. MSNS Spearhead conducts high-speed trials in Atlantic Ocean.

ATLANTIC OCEAN (Aug. 20, 2013) The Military Sealift Command joint high-speed vessel USNS Spearhead (JHSV 1) conducted high-speed trials, reaching speeds of approximately 40 knots off the coast of Virginia. Adm. Bill Gortney, commander of U.S. Fleet Forces, was aboard for the trial and was on the first helicopter to make a regularly scheduled passenger landing on the ship since passing its initial certification.
