Training Opportunity! G277 Residential Coastal Construction – Pilot Course

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Emergency Management Institute (EMI), and the New Jersey Joint Field Office are pleased to announce their offering of the Pilot of the 2-day course, G277 Residential Coastal Construction, on July 16-17, 2013 in Toms River, NJ, at Ocean County College. G277 is designed to train students on the updated fourth edition of FEMA’s Coastal Construction Manual (FEMA P-55, 2011). FEMA P-55 was recently updated and is the primary reference for planning, designing, constructing, maintaining, and retrofitting residential structures in coastal environments. G77 will provide students with an overview of FEMA P-55 through instruction and interactive student activities.

Course goals include:

1. Understand the basic principles of designing in coastal environment:

  • Premise
  • Framework
  • Constraints
  • Defining a “successful” building

2. Understand the differences in design requirements and expected performance between coastal construction and inland construction.

3. Understand the significance and “lessons” of historical events at the coast.

4. Describe minimum requirements and “best practices” for coastal construction.

5. Identify coastal hazards at potential building sites and identify where to obtain pertinent information.

6. Understand how to calculate design loads and conditions.

7. Understand the continuous load path principle.

8. Identify siting, design, construction, and maintenance defects that result in vulnerable buildings.

1.4 Continuing Education Units will be awarded following completion of the course. Engineers, architects, and building code officials; along with floodplain management, hazard mitigation, planning and building officials with building science knowledge are urged to apply!
