FEMA NEHRP Accomplishments in Fiscal Year 2012

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is pleased to announce the release of The FEMA National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program: Accomplishments in Fiscal Year 2012.

The report provides examples of replicable State projects, best practices, and initiatives for mitigating earthquake risk and increasing the community disaster resilience. Exciting projects accomplished by the FEMA Building Science Branch are also highlighted in the report. This includes new performance-based seismic design guidelines (FEMA P-58), expanded support to ShakeOut drills, the new earthquake training Home and Business Earthquake Safety and Mitigation (FEMA P-909), and national webinars including Incremental Seismic Rehabilitation of School Buildings (FEMA 395) where participants learned how to assess earthquake risks and secure non-structural elements in school facilities.

The National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program (NEHRP) seeks to mitigate earthquake losses in the U.S. through directed research and implementation activities in the fields of earthquake science and engineering. Through NEHRP, FEMA is responsible for developing effective earthquake risk reduction tools and promoting their implementation, as well as supporting the development of disaster-resistant building codes and standards. FEMA's NEHRP activities are led by the FEMA Headquarters, Federal Insurance and Mitigation Administration, Risk Reduction Division, Building Science Branch, in strong partnership and coordination with the FEMA Regions, States, multi-state earthquake consortia, and other partners.

The examples of earthquake mitigation and accomplishments described in the report show how FEMA and its partners continue to make progress toward earthquake loss-reduction nationwide.
