Earlier this week, President Obama laid out a plan for the government to more effectively use technology and innovation to better serve and meet the needs of the public. Deputy Administrator Serino blogged about how we're using technology and innovation here at FEMA to develop new and creative solutions to new challenges we may face as emergency managers:

"Here at FEMA, we understand the value of innovation and recognize that through innovation we can develop new and creative solutions and deliver these solutions to those that need them the most—survivors. During the initial response to Hurricane Sandy, the FEMA Innovation Team deployed to identify solutions to some of the challenges faced in New York. As the President highlighted, one innovative solution was providing our FEMA Corps teams with the equipment necessary to go door-to-door to register survivors who may have lost power. This solution was so warmly received that we have made it common practice."

Tropical storm Chantal is a good reminder to refresh your family's emergency kit. Hurricane season lasts through November 30! A few easy ways to learn about useful items for your kit:

- On your phone or tablet, check out our mobile site: http://m.fema.gov/build-a-kit
- Download the FEMA app for a full list of emergency supplies. Based on your type of phone/tablet, text APPLE or ANDROID or BLACKBERRY to 43362 for a link to download the app.

Try to assemble your kit well in advance of an emergency. You may have to evacuate at a moment's notice and take essentials with you. You will probably not have time to search for the supplies you need or shop for them.

In anticipation of tropical storm Chantal, we've deployed liaisons and an Incident Management Assistance Team to support local officials in the U.S. Virgin Islands. We also have staff year-round at FEMA's Caribbean Area Office in Puerto Rico coordinating with partners in the territory.

If you're in the area that may be impacted by the storm, remember to:

- Have important supplies ready for you & your family like a flashlight with batteries, water & a NOAA weather radio
- A "tropical storm" is still very dangerous and can produce winds over 70mph. Bring outdoor furniture inside.
- Follow local weather updates and any directions from local officials through TV/radio.
