Hello,

 

Atlanta Fire Rescue (AFR) is exploring options to create a “civilian” supervisor position within its Fire Inspection Unit.  Currently, the unit is staffed with some civilian and sworn inspectors. The sworn inspectors are Fire Lieutenants, Fire Captains, and a Fire Section Chief.  The plan for AFR Inspections is to create a “civilian” supervisor to allow for some of the sworn positions to be placed back into Field Operations.

 

We would like to gather information from several fire departments to help us in this transition.

 

If you could please answer the following question, we would greatly appreciate it.

 

  • Does your department inspection section have civilian personnel?
  • Are they performing duties as a first line supervisor?
  • Can you give an approximate average of the amount of inspections your department does in a year?
  • If available can you share an organization chart of your Inspection Section?

Good Day!

 

We are in the very initial stages of considering the use of remote controlled helicopters with video capability at emergency scenes. I am looking for fire departments that are currently using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) for fire and emergency scene reconnaissance.  Specifically what uses and limitations have you found with the current technology? What are the training uses? How long have you been using UAVs? Have there been any political or privacy ramifications and if so how have you dealt with them?

Resuscitation Academy

A two-way exchange of information

 

The Resuscitation Academy is offered tuition-free and attendees come from throughout the country (and world). The small class size allows for a two-way exchange of information. The faculty provides evidence-based information and tools to improve cardiac arrest survival and the attendees share the real-life challenges they face. Every community has a different constellation of culture, leadership, resources, and opportunity. Above all, we (the faculty) have learned that change is very challenging and one should never assume that just because someone comes along with a good idea that it will be embraced and implemented.

 

The tool kits are not exactly recipe books with specific steps for each program. Rather, they provide the information, background, training materials, sample letters, sample forms, references and resources, and a general approach to achieving buy-in from directors and managers, as well as the dispatchers, EMTs, paramedics, and police. Although they provide important tools, the contents of each kit must be applied and/or modified based upon resources and leadership within the attendee’s community.

 

Although most of the kits are directed toward the chain and frame of survival, there are two kits that provide supplemental information. One is on End of Life Issues, and the other tackles the challenging matter of raising funds. Most EMS programs face increasing demand for services and programs while grappling with decreasing resources. When EMS personnel are being laid off, it seems hardly the right time to take on new programs requiring new staff or additional resources. But we think there are ways to create additional resources. Call it the margin of excellence to make the system better, even in the face of difficult economic conditions.

 

One of the tool kits specifically addresses how to establish a local foundation or partner with an existing foundation and engage in fundraising. Several communities have used the information in this kit to find resources for new equipment and fund additional staff time for QI activities.

 

The tool kits are publicly available on the Resuscitation Academy website. Tool kits may be downloaded free of charge in a PDF format. All the information on the website is free.

It's been nearly two years since the citizens of Sioux Falls voted to build an events center. Now it's taking shape. One of the last major pieces of the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center's steel infrastructure is set in place.

 

Mortenson Construction Superintendent Brian Boe said, "You're seeing this building as we've been calling it, the bowl, actually take shape."

 

When it's all said and done, it will take six trusses to support the roof of the 302,000 square foot building.

Boe said, "There's a lot of engineering that's involved with how do you keep this 270 foot long truss stable while you erect the other stuff to it?"

 

So how do you lift something that measures 30 feet tall, weighs 100 tons and secure it 105 feet in the air? One of the pieces is erected on the ground inside the events center, the other on the outside. Two huge cranes then lift them into place.

"Each crane picks up a different piece, so what we do is called a mid-air splice. So you pick up one piece and you pick up the smaller one and then the crew bolts it together," Boe said.

Since January, Coalition instructors have presented "Know Your Smoke" in Arizona, Colorado, Melbourne and Brisbane, Australia, FDIC HOT, Washington, Tennessee, Florida, Texas, and Pennsylvania.  The evaluations and actual "results" reveal what could be a remarkable trend in wearing air on every fire scene.  Video was captured from every event, which includes testimonials.  This 5-minute video can be a training tool for those who wish to wake-up their departments
